I removed prop from a 1971 7.5 hp merc that came with v22 boat I bought. He warned me that prop had never been removed and when I removed it the old hub stayed behind on the shaft. Any ideas on how to remove it? I have tried vice grips and hammer, heating with torch and no luck. Thanks --- Steve

Wheel Puller

You might get it off with a wheel puller. Another option would be to take a dremel tool or equivalent and carefully cut it off. If you are lucky cutting one side will allow you to pry it off. If not cut the other side. Tom

that sounds right - thanks!

I found a post on iboats that also suggested a dremel. I will go ahead and get one and cut carefully. There is a double washer kind of thing at the end (collar guide?). If that is also stuck can it just stay there? Thanks.

If you cut...

...something over 1/2 way through the collar and then strike in the slot created with a flat chisel and hammer, the collar should split open the then slide off easily. Make sure to support the back side of the shaft on something solid so that the shaft takes no load as you strike. I've used this technique many times to remove the inner race of a bearing that has heat siezed to a shaft.

I will ask a dumb question??? *x

And I expect that you know this...but the Mercs have a reverse threaded hub on them. Did you try that? ;)

reverse thread

Can you give me some more info on this? What part of the hub is threaded? I don't know what a real hub looks like (after trashing mine) or how it connects. Thanks

See the nut on the end of the shaft nearest the

camera? NO, not the one holding the camera! According to Paul, to get it off, you have to turn it the WRONG way. 'righty-loosey, lefty-tighty'. I have no idea if that true or not when it comes to this engine but manufacturers engineer their products this way to avoid operational 'melt-downs'. It just depends. :)

Steve, I used to own a 1987 8hp Merc.

And when I did the annual servicing of greasing the hub, I found out that it is reverse-threaded. Give it a try and let us know. Fred explained it well - reverse threaded means - righty turn is loosey, lefty turn is tighty - just the opposite that we are used to. Good Luck. :)

Another thing about Mercs

The prop shaft is made of a type of rubber. This is done to absorb the shock of hitting something and spares the groved prop shaft from getting gnarled. As the prop gets older, the rubber wears out and eventually it will free-turn and you will have no propulsion. This also happened to my sons one time when they were usung it. It was on my dinghy, so it didn't cause me to get stranded. Check it several times annually when you service the engine.

woo hoo! it's finally off

Just to follow up that I finally got that old hub off. The dremel cut it off in about an hour - great tool! - never tried one before. I'm not sure if the washer in the pic is also supposed to come off. If anyone knows let me know. One washer did come off - a thin one with little prong things. Thanks for the help - Steve
