I have a '79 Cat. I went to lower my keel and the winch would not go in that direction. I did not want to apply too much force in fear of breaking something. Any suggestions on how to get the winch to lower the keel will be appreciated. Dan

Rusty keel

Is your boat in the water year round? Mine is. My keel was so rusty that it wouldn't go all the way up. It was also somewhat wedged in place. I hauled it out recently and cleaned it up. I also replaced the cable. Now it swings very easily.

Keel Lock off?

Make sure your keel lock is not screwed into the keel. It is on the port side of the keel trunk. Also your cable could be wrapped around itself on the winch drum. I just had my winch out of the boat while replacing the cable and noticed a piece of electrical wire wrapped around the drum that had been caught in the winch at one time.
