Any tips on how to get it out? I don't want to break it, but can't seem to twist it off, even when using pliers.

I may just be having a "mature moment" but...

What do you mean by "base plug," Rich?

No need to take it off

Rich, if you're talking about the base plug at the bottom of the head, I have never taken it off when winterizing after doing it one year and cracking the base which I then had to replace. I pump the holding tank out, rinse thoroughly with fresh water and then pump it out again. Then I put a gallon of non-toxic antifreeze ("the pink stuff") in the tank. Lastly, I pour about 2 quarts of the stuff in the bowl and pump the head as dry as it will get. If you do not want the antifress in the base, insert paper towels, let it soak and pull out. 6 times with 2 sheets crumpled at the base does it for mine. Good Luck
