Hi Stu; Finally got around to the packing gland. The mechanic was able to snug the GFO up until it stopped leaking. My arthritic grip was snug to me, but still loose to someone with a stronger grip; therefore, I did not have to remove the nut after all. When I do have to, I am confident from your advice that only a managable amount of water will get in, while doing the repair.
