Strut for Forward Hatch?

Just bought a new-to-us 1995 H 23.5. It seems odd that the forward hatch flops open 180 degrees until it's flat on the foredeck. Seems like it would be nice to have it open 45 degrees or so for ventilation both underway and at anchor. Is there some kind of little prop or strut missing? Tempting to just prop it open with a water bottle but then a gust of wind would sooner-or-later ruin that.

That's the way they were sold. You should be able to refit it with an aftermarket lifter. Check the store here on Hunterowners.com, there may be something available.
