hello. i just purchased an '80 H27. the PO had a jib sheet go overboard while motoring and ended up with a severely bent strut and shaft. i don't think the shaft is a problem to find, but i'm having trouble finding a replacement strut quickly and for a reasonable price. the original was made by dahmer marine, and thankfully they're still in business and can make another. unfortunately, they will take a few weeks and are quite expensive. i'd rather not try to bend the original back in shape. does anybody have any experience, suggestions, or better yet, an extra one laying about?

This past October I had a Dahmer strut straightened. I had removed the rudder for repair in Oriental, NC, and left for home in Ohio. They called to ask if I knew the strut was bent and the shaft was rubbing on the side of the stern tube. Of course I did not. I asked them if they had experience straightening struts and they told me they had done several. It is a very good yard, Sailcraft, and I trusted them and said go ahead. One thousand miles later, mostly motoring from NC to Tampa, I have had no problems.

thanks. i'll look into that. i've heard differing things about the ability to straighten them. if properly annealed, i'd guess it should work. any recommendations on good yards around the chesapeake?

I had a similar problem on my H-27. On the last sail of the season on the way to the haul out the main sheet wrapped around the prop. Stalled the engine, bent the strut and pulled the mounting screws partially out of the old plywood backing. The strut was bent but not bad. The boat came out of the water few days later after leaking quit a bit. I removed the strut and scraped around the side of the strut with a putty knife and some sand paper and I found the logo of the manufacturer. I called them and they still make the strut. It wasn't bent to much and after replacing the backing plates and screws I was able to straighten the strut while on the boat with a large pipe wrenches. If that didn't work I could have purchased a replacement. Can't remember the name of the company but itt was on the strut and they were on the net.

flexible shaft coupling ??

Does the group think that a flexible shaft coupling would have saved the day?
You see a couple of them around, i think one is from Vetus, one from PYI.
Here's a picture of what i'm talking about.
I don't have one on this boat but had one on the previous.

Probably not. I thought that the flex couplers were for minor misalignment but don't think they have shear function. But I could be wrong. A radial line cutter might, kind of like a little buzz saw at the end of the shaft near the prop.

Been There, Done That

Dahmer Marine Part # 2010, old designation was a Dahmer H1.

Been done the exact same road and if its really buggered and bent. do yourslef a favour now and replace it. My experience is the old one will fail you when you can least afford to have it do so.

Dahmer had the new one to me in about two days and I live on the East Coast if Canada and had the complicaions of Customs etc.

Took the old one off, used new stainless bolts, nuts and washers as well as stainless backing plates. Rebedded in and out with lots of 5200. Repairs are solid as a rock and leak free.
