No one really knows how many hours

Best way is when you haul out, wait for a cool day, grab the shaft and see if it rattles around. If it doesn't you are just fine. :D

Of course, if you think your local boatyard really needs the work, you can just have them do the work.

When we bought our boat in 2010 the bearing was the original and needed to be replaced. Ours is a 2001. This past winter when I was doing the dripless, transmission coupling and shaft it had a little bit of movement to it. So I replaced it because part was only $45 and it was easy to access.

I was told that you should expect about 5 years out of a good bearing.

Ohh. Had about 425 hours when I purchased the boat. We have about 740 right now. So we put almost as many hours on in 4 years as the original owner did in 10 years.

1700 hours at present and not a trace of radial play.

Any theories out there, for ocean going boats, as to why some go sooner (often much sooner) than others ? ? ?

Guess it depends on what you run into. We replaced at the start of the 2013 boating season, with 340 hours on engine. In fall of 2013 had to replace again as it was torn up by fishing line wrapped around the prop shaft and pulled through the bearing.

I'm still considering a prop shaft cutting blade.

After getting wrapped up with fishing line twice in one season I installed a Shaft Shark from AB Marine and have not had another problem. There is no way to know if it has cut anything or not but at least I feel like it will. I also have a Gori folding prop from the same company that I am very happy with.
