Peggy you must be tired of answering these questions and yes I really need to buy your book...I have checked the archives...but still have not found an answer. last year we put a new 45 gallon holding tank under our V berth....new odorless hoses..strong clamps....new ventelated loop. and we have a PHII. We have recently developed a strong onion smell....in the head area. the tank does not smell like its leaking...I did the towel and the hoses they seam fine. 1).Our shower drains into the bilge...I will check that. 2).Is it possible I could have pulled a critter into the intake that is rotting in my pump?? what is an onion smell?????? thanks Rob

That the odor is confined to head

narrows down the possibilities considerably...the source has to be in the head. It could trapped shower water in a section of the bilge under the head (air out the head, then stick your nose next to the drain and sniff...if that's it, it'll be obvious)...but whether that's it or not, install a sump! Or it could be stagnant sea water trapped in the head intake--in which case, the odor will be MUCH worse with the first flush after the boat has sat for a while, then mostly go away once all the stagnant water has been flushed out...Or you may indeed have sucked some animal or vegetable sea life into the head intake line and/or channel in the rim of the bowl that's died and is decaying... Just use the process of elimination to find it. At least you don't have to hunt all over the boat, only any place that odor can "vent" in in the head. Why does it smell like onions? D'd if I know...stagnant sea water and decaying sea life combine to produce all kinds of "interesting" odors as they decay.
