Stripping the COMBI

Hi Gang.

Well, I'm trying to refurbish my COMBI and have run into a snag. Some
quick advice would be hugely appreciate.

At item 14 of the instructions for the COMBI OVERHAUL it say to drive
the propeller shaft inward slightly by fulsome blows on the end of
the propellor boss so as to release the clamp rings (13-1)

Questions:

(1) Do you hit on the soft bolt that threads into the prop shaft?

(2) Should I remove the bolt?

(3) Should I replace the bolt with a heavier steel bolt first?

(4) How far in are you supposed to drive the shaft?

(5) How hard should the blows be?

(6) What if it does not want to budge?

(7) Are the clamp (tensioner rings) re-usable or do I need to replace
these? Are they in the kit?

Any quick thoughts (experience) to share would be a godsend!

Thanks, Trev

Hi Trev

Fulsome blows means hard. When I was first shown by Roger Evill (now sadly departed) the boat moved! He was the king of the combi.

I leave the bolt in the end of the boss. It is to move the shaft inwards and thus making the clamping rings loose. These can be used again.

The shaft will only move a small distance 1/4" or so. You then need to prise out again and repeat as necessary. Can be tedious.

If still jammed then may need to be pulled via the plate at the end of the reduction gearbox by undoing the three allen bolts and holding off so there is space to hit the shaft back forwards. Hard to explain, sorry.

Hope this helps a little bit

Hi;
I must have removed the shaft+sleeve a dozent times. The sleeve is is held by two compression rings- I ususally just gave it a litte "wack" with a rubber hammer and the rings were loose.

Hi Steve;

Thanks for telling me; I no longer have a compi, hence now I only have to take out the shaft- a lot easier....

Happy sailing... Wilhelm, V-257 Hi Wilhelm

The Petrol and Diesel Vega Combis are different. Same principle but different.

Cheers
