I need to replace a small section of my striping tape......upper near the gunnel. That stuff is HARD to remove so I'm thinking of just patching in the small section. Unless I get a suggestion on an easy way to remove the whole thing. Soooo for patching..............can anyone tell me what color mine is? I have a 1987 Hunter 23. This tape is about 1" wide and is a light metallic blue or sort of teal. I'm baaad with colors...*S* thanx

Heat

Mike: Use a hair dryer to heat the tape and SLOWLY peal it off. I did and it worked fine. Just don't rush it!

stripe eraser

Check the photo forum for the article on the pinstripe eraser. I have tried one of these things and it works better than anything else, doesn't harm the gelcoat (or paint), takes all of the adhesive with it.

Stripe replacement

Mike, I replaced the tape on my '88 H33.5 about 2 years ago and again this summer. I purchased the light blue metallic taper from West Marine's catalog. The instructions were minimal and there was no mention of a very thin protective layer of vinyl over the tape to protect the tape during manufacturing and handling. The sun cracked the vinyl within 2 years --the actual tape held up nicely; however, the cracked vinyl could not be removed from the tape. I pulled off all the tape and replaced it again making sure that the thin vinyl coating was removed BEFORE applying the tape to the hull. During application of the tape it helps to have someone hold the tape while you are positioning on the hull. Mix liquid dish detergent and water in a spray bottle and wet the hull so that the tape does not stick to the hull when positioning. After positioning, use a wet cloth or roller to squeeze out any air bubbles & allow it to dry. If Hunter can't help with replacement tape, West has a good selection at a reasonable cost. Good Luck! David.

Patching is tricky

I think you would have a lot of trouble matching the tape on your 87. My 88 is no where near the same color as when it was new. It has sun faded quite a bit. It may be a lot of work replacing the tape, but I think you would be much happier with the end result. Good Luck Ward

job done

Yea I'm replacing the whole thing....not patching. Got it off rather easily today by heating with a hair dryer as Dan suggested. Noooooo problem. Thanks again
