We have recently purchased a 1985 Hunter 31. There are two small stripes along the windows. How do we Replace them? Are they custom make for the boat? thanks

Remove them first.

Carol: Remove them first before you worry about replacing them. We took ours off and the boat looks better (in my opinion).

Check out the Photo Forum

Wright: Check out the Photo Forum. Search for stripe removal made easy. I used a device called an eraser that goes on a drill. I tried most of the other methods and did not have much luck. The vinyl was very thin and baked on. The eraser removed them very quickly.

What about the stripes below the toe rail?

The stripes on my H34 (1983) are hurtin. They're faded, sort of cracked looking. Any suggestions on how to spruce them up? Or take them off? Thanks.

The blue stripe .....

is gelcoat. The gelcoat is thick. Wet sand and compound it back to life. The white stripe is a sticker that may need to be removed and replaced

The stripes are vinyl.

Joe: The stripe below the toe rail is also vinyl. I tried using the eraser on it. It does take it off but it is much thicker and takes a lot more time. If you decide you want to remove it, I would suggest that you try some of the 3M remover or some Island Girl pink. This should make it easier to remove regardless of what method you end up using. I removed 7/8 of one side with an eraser. I am going to try the hair dryer/heat gun routine on the other side and see how that works. I suggest that you remove them and see what the boat looks like before you get excited about replacing them.

Doing This As We Speak

We're in the midst of removing the sheer line stripes. We used the same eraser tool that Steve D mentioned on the cabin side stripes last year. This tool is not working as well on the larger and tougher sheer line stripes. The blue stripe right below the toe rail is vinyl but it covers another blue stripe in the gel coat. We're using a combination of methods to remove the stripes. Heat with a hair dryer and try to pull off, this kinda works but as stripe cools it keeps tearing. Use the eraser tool. This works ok but you can't get under the toe rail and the curvature of the hull distorts the eraser and causes it to vibrate excessively. Use 3M Vinyl Woodgrain and Stripe Remover. Just came upon this at West Marine. ambient temperature needs to be 60 to 90 degrees for this to work well. I tried it on Saturday and it seems promising but temp was a little too cool to really use it. We're almost finished with port side and have started on starboard. Our plan is to paint the new stripes rather than use vinyl. We saw an H34 last summer that had done this and the stripes looked fantastic. The boat looked new. It seems to us that it will be much easier to keep painted stripes looking good than to periodically go through the work and difficulty of removing deteriorated vinyl stripes. This will also enable us to match the new sheer line stripes to the bootstripe which we'll be refreshing with the same color paint. Good luck.
