Have a 1986 Hunter 31. The aft stringer is damaged(cracked). Since this is part of the grid system (I think), what has to checked before repairs begin? Would cutting out the damaged section and rebuild from underneath the proper procedure in repairing the stringer?

Could you post a picture? That could help us help you. It might be as simple as just cracked gel coat on the surface as opposed to that structure actually being broken. If it was stressed enough to break the stringer, you might think the hull also flexed that much and would be cracked too.

No pictures yet. Club is 1 1/2 hours away. will return tomorrow to club. The structure of the stringer has been compromised on the aft side for 6". Have floorboards off. Cannot see hull interior due to liner, but the exterior looks fine. Its been this way for a few years now.
