I purchased a 1986 34 Hunter last Spring. This spring someone told me I had stress cracks on the transom. I guess I noticed them before but was not too worried, well, because it's an old boat and it's not going to be perfect. Is this likely something that is just cosmetic or do I need someone to take a closer look?

it depends on a number of factors: where they are, how big they are, how deep they are, and what may have caused them. Take some pics and post them and the rest of us will be able to better comment.

I have a couple of small spider web cracks at the transom edges from POs' encounters with docks. As these boats age, the gel coat becomes more likely to crack. I have some other ones in other areas, all the result of aging (save one) but none of serious concern.

Keep an eye on them. Hair line stress fractures in the gel coat aren't at all unusual and are generally cosmetic and there is no need to worry. I've heard of folks cleaning them up and rubbing a little paint into them to help hide them... If, on the other hand, you observe that they are spreading or getting deeper or wider you may need to look into it more closely.

That's what Capt'n Tolley's is for. It works well for the small cracks.
