Has any one had experience in servicing a streamstay roller furling? I would like to dimantle my unit and see if it is worth repairing. The bearings in the drum appear to be in very bad shape.

If you go on the Rig-Rite, Inc. web site (
http://www.rigrite.com/Furling/hyde/hyde.html) you can see an exploded diagram of the furler and parts that are available. Be sure to order the correct size for your furler. They tend to be somewhat expensive on this site but will fit. You may be able to buy cheaper bearing from a mechanical supply house. The bearings are a thrust type so it is important to get the correct ones. The bearings in the drum are not too hard to replace, but you will have to detach the lower end of the furler from the boat. You can then dismantle it and take the drum home and work on it. It is mostly held in place with set screws. The upper jib halyard swivel body is more difficult and the whole mast and furler will need to be taken down to service it. The snap rings are large and you will need a large snap ring pliers.
Take the time to change out and grease the furler drum regularly. I let mine go a long time and the bearings froze one day and when I tried to furl in my jib, the entire furler unscrewed itself from the boat and I almost lost my mast.
They say that these furler systems are bullet-proof as long as they are regularly serviced.

I forgot about RigRite, but I'll pull my manual out tonight anyway, I recall a maintaince proceedure that might be helpful. I know they say there are bullet proof, but the design makes a bit uneasy - I never have disassembled it, maybe when I do it will put my mind to rest. (or not) It works great, though.
Maybe mine is beyond help then. I have detached it for the boat and had to drill out all but one set screw. However, that is as far as I can get. How does ot come apart and what is next part that comes off? I have looked at the rig rite site but mine appears to be a little different or else I am missing something. Three prople have looked at it and we just can not get the drum apart.
It has been a while since I rebuilt one of these but I seem to remember that you can unscrew the central bearing shaft portion of the drum after the set screws are out. Yes, I had to drill mine out as well. I don't remember exactly how the drum portion is attached to the central shaft but it was not something very complex - perhaps another set screw or set pin.
