I recently found strange stains on my transom. When the boat is at the dock or at anchor the stain is five inches above the water, however when under engine power it's exactly at the water level. I'm thinking fuel/exhaust stain, but I don't understand why. Can anyone explain this?

Have you seen the water stains in your bath tub? How did they get there? How about your toilet?
Water stains all that it touches, no matter how pure it looks. You drive a perfectly good running diesel engine through the water and your going to leave a trail.. If you are the one producing the trail your going to get some splash back.
This is the reason we need to come up with the way to teleport our boats out to the water so we can just sail and not have to use the diesel engine to get out of the marina. Or get a scrub brush and tell the crew... Hey matey... Get busy cleaning that stain on my boat. We need to be ship shape.
