We were in the middle of Lake Michigan, motoring in flat seas from South Haven to Racine (about 70 miles), when we saw two emerald green beams, like headlights, emanating from the setting sun, stretching across the sky. I believe they are called corpuscular rays. As the moonless night turned black, we were then treated to fantastic lightning show over the lake off of Chicago, 90 miles to the south. For us, the skies were clear and the stars were absolutely spectacular. I remember stepping out of the companionway that night, with a fresh beer in hand, and saying, "All we need now is the northern lights." And sure enough that is what we got.
