Red-tailed hawk. The dark band on his belly is the definitive field mark. The picture attached is a non-releasable bird I had a long time ago. It was a great bird. I called him Ed. Hawk. Yes the period is correct after Ed. He was an Education bird. Thus the name Ed. Hawk.

You beat me to it Kermit! I was looking it up while you were posting. I wasn't sure if the east coast had them but out here we do. By the time I found out Carolinas have them in winter you bushwhacked me! ha
Trying to get ready to leave for Arizona Monday but it is sooooo cold out there!
Happy New Year, Chief

Chief,
I'll try to find a picture of me in my younger days holding Ed. Hawk. I miss those days.

In my area we have an issue with Ospreys landing on the windex or the wind instruments and damaging them. The bird proof spike on the bigger ones works well too.

On top of damaging those things, the stuff they leave behind is nasty. Poop and fish parts. There are so many Osprey in my area too.

Probably a female since she's so big. Sorry for sounding like a know-it-all. Read my profile. It'll tell you that I don't know much about sailing but I do know a little something about birds of prey. I wish I knew more about sailing.

don't feel bad about knowing all that i am glad some one does i don't know a lot about birds but that is because i am a nuts and bolt kind of person i have always liked them just never studied them ...when i was a kid it would make me mad as hell if one of buddy's would shoot them with the BB or pellet gun and i have never hunted for trophy i think its wast of energy and ammo had a land lord one time that want to kill a bird in her nest with young in it i told him to leave the birds alone they were not hurting anything and so he did

Have you guys ever seen a bald eagle and an osprey fight? It is amazing.

I have seen an Osprey dive on an Eagle that was flying. The bald eagle turns over, in mid air, and sticks its talons up to defend itself. Apparently this not uncommon but it is cool to watch. We use to call this the airshow and it happened from time to time when I was at one of my favorite anchorages....Breton Bay, MD (near Leonardtown, MD).

no but when i was in Australia when driving down the motor ways i would see eagles flying beside the car about 10 ft or so off the ground sorta like they were escorting the car was pretty cool to watch and they seemed to keep up

I've had a stowaway onboard, too.

He plopped himself here for about 10 miles of ICW until he found a better fishing area to work.

We had Red-tail hawks that built nests in the top 1/3 of the fir trees that surrounded our hay fields on the farm. They would raise 1 chick per summer and would catch 2 to 3 snakes a day to feed the chick. Fun birds to watch as they hunted. They would fly 100 feet or more above the field then drop to about 6 to 10 feet above the snake, flair out and drop the last bit to capture the snake. Neat.

That is another thing that I love about this site......there's somebody here that knows a little something about everything. Or a whole lot about specific things. I'm constantly amazed.

I had a sharp shinned hawk grab a smaller bird on my deck last fall then proceed to eat it standing on the deck railing about 6 feet from the window. Nothing was left except a few feathers after the feast. We tried to film it but the camera seems to focus on the mesh of the window screen.

Some of you might enjoy this. It is a live camera on an Eagle nest in Florida. We had some of the grandkids here when the chick hatched a couple of days ago. The admiral is into birds in a big way.

A few weeks ago I was just drifting along in the ghost wind And a blue heron started to land on the bow pulpit. It was about to touch down when the jib moved and he aborted the landing.

Great call, Kermit. Ed. is one beautiful creature. I wouldn't want to be on the business side of that beak. To answer Chief's question about Red Tailed Hawks - they are plentiful on the East Coast. We are on the migratory path for them. For those that don't know Osprey's are also common here. Some of them have, trackers and are tracked as they migrate to South America to winter. They tend to come back to the same nests here, as they do in New England, the Chesapeake, upper Mid-West, and Europe.
