Hi! I've got a '79 Cat 30, and would like to replace the original alcohol stove with a new propane stove. Has anyone done this, and what stove will fit? Thanks, Scott

Stove conversion

Hi Scott~ Question: how often do you use the stove? If it's relatively infrequently (say once or twice a week), you might look into just upgrading your alcohol stove. I'm assuming it's an old pressurized Princess or something, right? You should check into Origo stoves. They're alcohol but not pressurized. I have one & have known several folks who have them & love them. Mine's great! No pain in the arse wiring & hoses & setting up special places for the tanks. No sniffers, no chance of explosion (remember the Ocean Gypsy a few weeks ago - he was in my moorage), burns relatively clean and hot (not as hot as propane but better than old pressurized stoves). Not to mention you'll most likely be saving a good chunk of change. Just something to consider. LaDonna

I also agree Origo alcohol stoves are great.

My 2 cents worth I agree with LaDonna. I had upgraded to the Origo on my old boat and I loved it. It worked very well. Its kind of like a big alcohol "sterno" can under the pot, but I could cook anything on my stove (even boiling lobsters)....it might take a little longer than my propane , but I thought it worked just fine. No flare-ups, easy to install, easy to use.

Thanks for the info!

Thanks for the Origo recommendation. I would go that route in a flash, except my cutout width is 19 1/2 inches and Origo requires about 22, I think. I would rather not remodel my galley, so I was looking for one that fit in my existing space. There may not be any. Scott

propane or bust

Scott, I have just converted my catalina 22 fron alcohol to propane. What i did was remove the old stove measured it's dimensions, and took them to the store where I measured every posibble stove untill I found one that fit my specs. the stove that worked for my 1982 C-22 was a wenzel two burner propane stove. I have taken the stove and modified it for my boat. This included removing the standing legs, and drilling holes in the base to fit the old mounting screws, as well as havine a flexible propane line made to reposition the fuel tank. The fuel used is the standard colman propane bottle found at any local store. I hope this helps you out. Matt

Hi SCott

I use a regular.. Coleman.... 2 burner propane stove that I used for years on camping trips. Uses the small $2.29 propane cylinders...... fits great on the galley platform (I do not bolt the stove to the galley....... cause... very often I will cook out in the cockpit). You can buy these stoves most anywhere.... Army/Navy store ....Walmart.... Kmart..... cost about $40. Works well for me!! Just my 2 cents worth..... good luck
