NEVER MIND! Gads...went to the Web site and researched old forums. Got what I need. I've got an alcohol stove in the 1992 that no one's apparently ever used. Any experience with this kind of Arigo 2000 (i think)? Before I go filling the thing and trying to cook aboard, I thought I'd ask ... does it make a terrible mess? Flare ups? Better to get a rail-mounted bbq?

Best use of alcohol ever (other than drinking)

Chris: These stoves are THE best. They put out about 85% or more compared to a propane stove. The only thing you need to check is if they have the retro fitted piece for the center of the burner. This is NOT a pressurized stove. You pour about a pint of alchol in the canister and light the burner.

I Agree they work great

Put a plastic sandwich bag under the burner when your not using it. Keep the alcohol in the stove!

Great stove

The name is Origo, I think. They have a website and you can download the manual for the stove. I have an oven as well and it's works wonderfully.

Just Don't Try To Fill The Canister In The Stove

These are great stoves. Used one for ten years. Couple of pointers: Fill the canister out of the stove, over the sink, tilted as you fill. Use a measuring cup or some other with a beaker. Fill until saturated. You want to keep the fuel off the finished surfaces of your counter. Let it cool off before filling if you run out. Never fill it in the stove. You can get spill-over and a fire. Make a gasket to put between the sliding orifice and the canister when you are not using it to avoid evaporation. Again, these are great stoves and you will find it useful. Rick D.

Almost lost mine. Long-winded post.

I agree with everything that has been said. My wife loves our Origo 6000 (two burners with oven.) She cooks everything with it. (I'm the "cleanup man.) When I bought our boat two years ago('92 33.5') the stove had been removed and the space had been filled with a small refrigerator. Above this spot the owner had installed a microwave. When I asked him where the stove was he said "Oh I pulled that thing out as soon as I bought the boat. It's much too dangerous having fuel below, and we get a lot more use out of the microwave. Plus having a refrigerator is great." My surveyor took me quietly aside and said "If I were you I'd try to get that stove back. They are wonderful units, and not at all dangerous if you use them properly." Boy am I glad I took his advice. It's a beautiful unit, works like a charm, and is very safe. A refrigerator and microwave would have been useless when we are cruising. Besides I think the icebox works fine. I don't mind dealing with the ice. By the way, two of the knobs were broken, so I contacted Origo and they promptly shipped me replacements, very cheaply.

Origo rules!

Last summer I replaced the old Kenyon pressurized 'curtain burner' in my '81 H27 with an Origo 4000, and I love it. Hot, safe (using some common sense) and simple to use. PLUS I purchased a new unit on ebay for about half the 'normal' asking price at the various marine stores.

Alcohol-Caution

The following is from SEAWORTHY the BoatU.S. Marine Insurance and Damage Avoidance Report, Vol. 20 No. 3 July 2002: Page 5 "----The reality is that there are more claims from the use of alcohol than from LPG or any other cooking fuel in the BoatU.S. claim files. ----Alcohol is a low-viscosity, nearly invisible, and volatile liquid that is easy to spill and hard to see. And when it is first lighted, alcohol creates a pale blue flame that is also difficult to see on a bright day. -----this one involving a non-pressurized alcohol stove, a woman had been cooking dinner and was refilling a canister when the vapor ignited and burned 45% of her face and body ( Claim #9907397A )."

No substitue for stupid!

There is no way these stove are going to ignite IF YOU FOLLOW THE F----- directions. If you try to fill the stove when the stainless steel is HOT you are going to have a problem. There is no fuel in the world that is going to be safe with an IDIOT (man or woman). Do not fill the canister in the stove. Do not fill the canister when it is hot. HOW MANY WARNINGS CAN YOU GIVE TO AN IDIOT.
