Does anyone know if the medical type of isopropyl alcohol sold in drugstores will burn with the same heat value as the stove alcohol sold at marine supply? I have an opportunity to buy a lg quantity of the medical stuff cheap, but not sure if it is compatible with use in the stove. Any opinions? Thanks!

No!!!!

Isopropyl alcohol sold in drugstores is bad evil stuff which smokes like you can't beleive. Use only us denatured grain alcohol. SOOT-FREE works well and recommended for ORIGO marine stoves. Still stinks though.

Everclear?

Just wondering about Everclear or 151 Rum. You could also use them for their medicinal effects. I have not bought any since college but from what I remember it's medicinal effects were substantial.

Hardware Store Stuff

I have had real good luck with denatured alchohol sold in the paints and solvents section of the hardware store. Our local hardware sold boat supplies as well as the regular stuff. the salesman there recommended the economy sized solvent stuff, and I have noticed no difference between the two. The solvent stuff is a ton cheaper, probably because there is no mention of the word "boat" on the can. Mike Pajewski H26 "Loon"

perform a test yourself

Go to the drug store or your food mart and buy a pint of the rubbing alchol, if you have a origo or pressured alc. stove, try it, "IF" it dosen't work, turn the origo upside down, and it will dry out quickly, the same go's for the pressured stove, remove the cap , pump out what you can and leave the cap off, and it too will dry out completely.
