Storm trysail?

Hello All,
My "new" Vega has two modest reefs in the main and no storm trysail.
I have a good storm jib in inventory and will take it to Mexico with
me, but am wondering about a trysail. First, does anybody have one
they don't ever use and/or want to get rid of? Second, does anybody
have dimensions for a "recommended" trysail to simplify my guessing
and shopping for used sails? Thanks in advance, Ken preston, "Lyra"
(soon to be leaving Puerto Vallarta. . .)

Hi Ken

Just get another reef in the mainsail. Much easier and if the wind gets that
strong then use bare poles...

Ken, Are you in Puerto Vallarta now? There is a sailmaker in the marina
where your boat is. Not cheap but a good reputation. They could probably add
a third set of reef points. I considered a trysail for Lyric but the
sailmaker talked me out of it. He said a third set of reef points would work
and in order to use a trysail I'd have to take the main down or install a
seperate track. For what it is worth Lyric fore reaches at a knot an hour in
50 knot winds with two reefs and no jib. Get the boat in the direction you
want to go. Drop the jib. Put the helm over and lash it. With no jib up you
won't come about. I was very pleased with the motion. Good luck on the trip
and when you get to San Diego give me a call. Email me at pelagicasd@...

Fifty knot winds!! Mama Mia!! One assumes, Walt, that you and Lyric were not in that kind of blow by choice. Personally,I'm hoping that the Vega sailing gods spare me.I am happy however to have this kind of advice if I ever venture into serious off-shore waters. I have taken serious note of this discussion. Does anybody out there still use the through-the-mast roller reefing common to the Vegas equipped with the Selden mast and boom? (I have the OEM Selden system). Were the Vega Proctor systems similar to Selden's? Would appreciate any advice/experience re: the (+'s) and (-'s) and reliability of the OEM Vega roller reefing system and any advice re improvements on same...........Cheers

Hi Walt:

I've sailed through a few gales with winds approaching 50 knots and seas up
to 18 feet.(in deep water- little white water). I have a Proctor system
with roller reefing.
I never had any problem, though I put in the reef in time (there is
nothing worth than
waiting too long. It's always easy to set the sails, but quite hard to
lower the sails when the
wind is up).
I'm also using a storm sail , and I admit, when necessary, I start the
engine when it becomes
a matter of survival. (I'm sailing single handed).
And about Brians Commend: I guess a jiffy reefing is ?better?, but I've
sailed my Vega for way
over 20 years, and I'm used to what I have.
