Have opportunity to purchase a storm sail but it has shanks to go on forestay. If need to use storm sail, it is not the time to start taking down head sail.
Appreciate comments on having series of straps made to loosly go around the furled head sail and use shanks to close off the loop and raise sail with spinaker halyard??

I should add that they will retrofit a hank-on sail with the sleeve for you. The sleeve is key for this to work. It's slippery so it slides up and over the furled headsail. I think the setup you suggest would bind and snag all the way up.
I have a Gale Sail and use it all the time and rarely in storm conditions. We have an old 150% headsail that's in need of replacement so if I try to reef by rolling it up a few turns, it looses all shape. So I just pop this on and sail flat.
I have sailed with this in 25+knot conditions with a double reefed main and had a blast! 7-8+ knots and comfortable.

Hello Scotian,
There is a storm sail product (I can't remember the name) that slips a sleeve around the furled headsail rather than the straps you are considering. I think the sleeve would allow the sail to slide up or down easier than the straps would. Storm conditions are no time to worry about individual straps getting hung up on the furled sail or tearing off individually. Best Wishes, Phil

Seahorse is referring to the Gale Sail. But there is nothing like a dedicated storm jib. Problem is that most skippers rarely do a headsail change and wait too long before they start to think about one. I can do a headsail peel in about two minutes with my auto pilot. The key is hoisting the storm jib up inside the larger genoa then drop the larger sail. Of course, you will need to have a twin groove extrusion to do this. The finer entry of the storm jib makes the sail hugely more efficient than having 3 to 5 inch roll of sail on the luff of the storm jib.

What about putting a padeye type thingy on the deck aft of the furler/stay and attaching the tack of the storm sail directly to the padeye and using the spin halyard to raise it?

Install a removable inner stay for use with the storm sail. Works better being closer to the mast any way if you also have a reefed main or storm trysail.

The Galesail is a great product from ATN (Etienne Giroire). The galesail provides two key elements, it provides a necessary forward power balance to your sail plan, and just importantly it prevents that big ol' genoa you have up there from unrolling during the gale. It is a brilliant idea, easy to deploy, and works well.

Storm jib on babystay

I have a baby stay on my boat (yamaha 30) and just bought a storm jib with hanks that would fit perfectly. But the shrouds get in the way - close hauled you need the sheets inside the shrouds, reaching you need them outside the shrouds - I dont fancy switching the sheets around on a day when I need the storm jib just to be able to adjust my course. I think I'll have to get the hanks off and put in a smaller bolt rope to fit the roller furler. Thoughts?
