most race rules specify the formula of 5% of "I" squared, so if your "I" is 50 feet that would be 125 sq ft of sail for the storm jib

Trying to be helpful here. I assume you have a furler on the headstay. Do you have an inner forestay? Otherwise, how would you set a storm jib/staysail? Agreeing with gleason about size, although I think your I might be closer to 55. That's a pretty big boat.

Correct Storm Sail size

Alan,
Storm sails:
It’s really important to understand that the size of storm sails has been dictated by offshore racing rules and gives you a ‘maximum’ area allowed. This does not take into account cruisers, boat types, sailors.

I will say from personal experience that the maximum area under the rule is to be too BIG in heavy air, heave too conditions. As a sailmaker, I generally make our storm sails about 25% smaller than the maximum area.

For the 461 the ‘max’ storm jib area would be around 149sqft. I would make it more in the 110-115sqft area.
The ‘max’ luff would be 35.5’
IG is: 54.52 on the 461

The area rules are:
Storm jib luff length: 0.65 * IG2
Storm jib area: 0.05*IG2\
