The local Navy surplus store has new cargo chutes made of heavy
canvas and webbing. They are not the type described by Lin Pardey in
that when open they resemble a starfish more than a parachute. They
are also only 5 feet across while the Pardeys suggest 8 feet. Given
that the Vega is lighter than either of their boats do you think that
a 5 foot sea anchor is large enough, or would the controlling factor
be freeboard, which I suspect would make the Vega similar. I saw them
by chance, God help me if I ever needed one, and the price is right
($35) but not if they are too small. Any thoughts?
