I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
I am going to add an outboard to my dingy this year. I am not sure where to store the gas for the outboard. I am only going to carry 1 gallon at a time but I have no clew where to put it. I don't want to put it in a storage locker and my boat's auxilary is diesel. Where do you store your gas for your outboard?

I store 3 1 gallon containers in my anchor locker.

..any vapors can leave the same way water drains. No electrical except for windlass and I open the locker before turning it on to vent. I also store one more tank under your helm seat...this is for H36.

Propane locker

This came up a year or so ago. I have enough room in my propane locker to store my dinghy can. Lots on the board said that was a bad Idea, but no one could actualy explain why. It remains my favored storage spot. The space is vented and secluded from the cabin. Seems good to me.

Anchor locker

I bought a Yamaha 1000 generator. Runs on gasoline. I store it in the anchor locker. The anchor sits on the bowsprit roller giving me a nice spot. Vent is same as for water. I sail on fresh water lake and so far no problems. When I go on the big lake (The Pacific) I will have to make a bigger propane locker with enough room for gas cans & BBQ propane bottles. Location is under aft cockpit seat.

Gas in the propane locker

I agree that it may be not so good a choice. And only because on my 95 336, the solenoid for the LP also lives in there. It is electric. Hmmmm, you through the switch, perhaps a spark when it opens. Probably overkill but... because afterall propane vapors could be similar. I store mine in the swim bridge locker where the holding tank seacock and exhast hose for the aux live. Along with spare oil, antifreeze and the emergency ground tackle. Cheers Rick

I agree with Rick

I agree with Rick regarding the threat of the LP solenoid if it's in the propane locker. Why doesn't this logic apply equally to storing propane in there, you ask? I'll bet it's because any leaking propane gas is heavier than air and will concentrate in the bottom of the locker and drain overboard out of the hole that's supposed to be there exactly for this purpose. Gasoline vapors are not heavier than air. These are my guesses - I do not know for sure. FWIW, I store dink gas in the dink, hanging off the davits. Dave S/V Pas de Deux Catana 471-44

Propane Locker

Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and should be safe in the propane locker. The solenoid should be safe with gasoline if it is safe with propane. The main thing is that you want any fumes to go overboard and not accumulate in the bilge or other enclosed space. Gas vapors in an enclosed space = bomb!!!!
