Try Oderlos

I had a similar problem. Switching to Oderlos solved the problem. Let me preface what I am about to say by saying I respect Peggy, her products and her contributions to HOW. However, due to the small and inadequate venting on my 340, there is not enough oxegen entering the waste tank to get KO working well in my boat. Oderlos (check out the label) produces more oxegen to energize the good stuff so it multiplies and attacks the bad stuff. That's my short and unprofessional recall of the Oderlos product and how it works. And, it DOES work. We can go several weeks without a pumpout now and have no oder problems. It's good stuff. A little more expensive, but worth it. BTW, do not mix the two. Pump your KO tank, flush thoughly, then begin using the Oderlos. Good luck and let me know how it works, Wynn Ferrel S/V Tranquility H340

You are on the right track

We have a 380 also and can only tell you our experience. 1) KO works great and Peggy is a great assest to this site but... I think Hunter may have undersized the vent a little. KO needs air to work it's magic, and a lack of air means a lack of breakdown in the tank. 2) We flush our 380 with the shower nozzle using fresh water only and have been doing so for two years. It works great at keep the little decomposing critters from smelling with salt water flushes. 3) Even doing that if you leave a little fresh water in the bowl and leave the boat for a week it still smells when you arrive back. We started using CP for cleaning the bowl and leaving some in the bowl when we leave the boat. 4) Six week pump out is too long a time for stuff to sit back there. Get out and sail more using your macerator, or get to a pump out all the time to reduce the smell. Remeber while you are pumping out to flush lots of fresh water into the tank and pump it out again. 5) Remember the holding tank vent is on the port side aft near the cocktail seat. Don't let anyone sit there while you flush especially if the boat is not moving! :-( Hope this helps, enjoy the 380! Bob Knott H380

getting rid of your odor

Bob Knott gave you good advice....I would stress his advice of pumping the tank, THEN, AFTER PUMPING, ADD FRESH WATER TO THE BOWL, (FROM THE SINK). I keep a six once plastic cup in my sink and instruct everyone on its use....No more odors!!!Good luck Gary

Thanks for the good advice!

Just wanted to thank all that responded for the good advice. I will try the fresh water flush, will check into Odorlos, and may even add a second, larger vent line to the holding tank to get some through airflow. I'll post my "results" in a month or so. Thanks again!

One more time...

The holding tank, unless it's leaking, is never the source of odor INSIDE the boat. So nothing you put in the tank or do to modify the tank ventilation is gonna cure odor inside the boat. Any hose of any quality can permeate. So test the hoses for permeation by wetting a rag in hot water...wring it out and wrap it around the hose (test all the hoses, use a separate clean rag for each)...leave it there till it cools...remove the rag and smell it. If you can smell the same odor on the rag, the hoses have permeated...replacement is the only cure. If it's not the hoses, keep looking for the source. Two articles in the Head Mistress forum library should help you find it: "Head Related Odors..." and "Boat Odor Isn't All in Your Head."

Final flush

After the fresh water flush, use 1/4 cup white vinegar and flush that before leaving the boat. this helps clean the hoses, won't effect the K O and helps with the odor too.
