A friend and I purchased a pair used Barient 22 self-tailing winches. We each installed one on our masts for halyards and for going aloft. We have both worked on and serviced winches before and we disassembled, cleaned, greased, and reassembled both of these winches. After installing them on the mast they spun freely as expected. However, after installing the self tailing unit, they seem to bind up. They can still be spun but they are stiffer than it seems they should be. We cannot see anything dragging or touching so we were both wondering if these self-tailing winches are just tight. Can anyone here shed some light?

Thanks

We are not missing anything that we could tell on either winch. Unless, of course, the previous owner had removed a spacer before we purchased them.

In case you don't have it, the below url links to parts diagrams for most (if not all) Barient's line.

I didn't see the ST version for the 22 size, but perhaps another ST model, such as the 19ST, might give you a clue to determine if a part might be missing.

If memory serves (and it often doesn't), seems I saw a couple of Barient 22's a way's back on SBO's for-sale classified section. Were these the ones that you and your friend bought. Something in my mind recalls that the previous owner commented in his add that he had just installed a self-tailing part? Maybe these are converted 22's? Long shot, but just a thought ...

Barient made many different versions of the same model winch. There may be 3 or 4 versions of the #22ST. Some of them were never documented in their brochures. Can you post a few photos of your winch so we know exactly which winch version you have? You said that they were fine until you installed the self tailing unit. Are you referring to the jaws or stripper arm? Are the jaws plastic or metal? Are these winches the Grand Prix, Offshore or Ultra Lite model?

Thanks guys, I'll take some photos of the winch this weekend. I live two hours from my boat so cannot get there except on weekends.
