Stiff Shifter

I have a 1984 Catalina 30. I purchased the boat in April 2010 and it came with an Edson wheel. The gear shift is on the left of the pedistal. There is a great deal of resistance when shifting in and out of gear. It does just fine in forward or reverse gear. No problem, just trying to shift in and out of gear. Any similar problems and how were they fixed. Thanks and I enjoy reading all of the post.

Rag Bagger I also have the same problem of shifting. I have not had time to track down the problem. If you discover what causes this problem please share it with us.

Remove the teleflex cable fork at the transmission and verify the cable moves freely through full range of motion. Check adjustment of the FWD clutch on the transmission. Previous owner may have over tightend this to compensate for other issues: incorrect grade of oil (too slick), glazed clutch plates, etc........

I have same concern, now carry tools to manually change gear position if the need occurs. I read another thread from someone in a crowded marina that couldn't get it out of foward into neutral.

I had the same problem. In my case bushings were shot. I had to replace Clutch and Throttle Control Retrofit $329 from Catalina Direct.
