stiff gear shift

It is that time year in Nova Scotia when the boats are being hauled out. The gear shift is very stiff on my boat. I have yet to determine if it is the gear shift in the cockpit, the connecting cable, or the gear box arm at the back of the engine. Forgive my terminology. I am thinking it is the gear box (transmission) arm as it is somewhat corroded. I am hoping it is not inside the actual gear box (tansmission). Before I start disconnecting the various systems to test each, does anyone have any suggestions? As well what is the best lubricant for the gear box. Is it the same as the engine oil? The photo is the gear box and arm. Thanks Steve

Gear box lube.

Yes, same 10W-30 in the tranny as you use in the engine. First test should be to disconnect the cable at the transmission. Lock on a set of vise grips or something. You want to test with the same length of leverage as with the pedestal lever. Hopefully you will find the problem is the cable and/or the pedestal lever. Regardless, be sure and drain and replace transmission oil after warming in gear. My H37C with the 2QM20 has transmission model #KBW10. Oil capacity is .6 liter. Check oil level with dip stick threads ON TOP of the case, NOT screwed down.

Check your gear box type before using 10W-30

It depends on what type of gear box you have. It is best to look it up in your engine manual. If you don't have a engine manual, I am sure you can go to Hunter's website and look it up. You can find the type on the gear box. I have attached a page from my h37.5 engine manual.

Ed, yours takes ATF.

Ed, if you have the original transmission, it should have ATF in it.
