Hi all,

I hope this has been a great sailing season for all.....so far.

I have a '91 Catalina 30 with a Universal M25X and Hurth trans.

I'm having a problem with my Trans control. I always sail with my tranny in reverse. When I try to move to neutral, so I can start my engine, the control fights me and today I had to manually go to the engine and move the control lever, on the trans to free it. I was always concerned with the amount of force needed to shift through the positions, but now I am more so.

My first thought is a binding control cable, since the shift lever at the trans seemed to move freely.

Has anyone had experience with this problem?

Thanks for your replies and Happy Sailing....

My '93 Cat 30 experienced the same issue -- cleaned/lubed both ends of the cable - problem solved. First, disconnect cable at engine and check to be sure trans level moves easily (seems you did that)

Thanks. Now that I know I'm not alone, it's certainly worth a try.

I have experienced the same effect after I removed the cable from the engine housing to do some adjustment. I removed the cable from a pipe clamp that was used to hold it in place near the scuttle box. When I replaced the clamp, I tightened it too much and it pinched the cable with the result that it would not move easily. Backing off the nuts and bolts holding the clamp cured the problem. The cable was able to slip back and forth easily and the transmission responded smoothly to any shift.

Thanks. This is another possible solution. I will check it out.
