Sticky throttle/shifter

The throttle shifter on my 94 Vision 36 is very hard to operate. It's a MV shifter, one lever operates the throttle and shifter.

It's always been hard to operate, I've tried adjusting the cable ends but it is still hard to operate. It takes great strength to shift gears and I'm affraid I'm going to break something.

I've disconnected the transmission and shifted it by hand with no problem.

The boat has a Yanmar 3jh2e engine. Some people say the throttle at the engine gets sticky and needs to be serviced.

Anyone have any advice?

Thanks,

Mike

Mike,

Replace the actual cable with a new one. They are not that expensive. While you are at it I would do both even though the throttle is free. You can get the correct length of the cables from Hunter I'm sure and buy them on line.

Mike: I have similar issues. I think it is actually the shifter. It is something that I have been able to deal with it so I have not tackled the issue.

I think that model shifter was changed in subsequent years.

Different boats (mine is a 40.5), but same problem. Since I am down waitng for a new holding tank, I decided to pull both the shifter and throttle cable. I was amazed how stiff to operate they were when I had them removed.
Best pricing I could find was from Defender, I think I saved close to $40.00 for the two over West Marine.
New ones work smooth and easy. Old ones were virtually impossible to move, when out of the boat.

Update on sticky throttle

Last weekend I finally had time to deal with this issue.

I disconnected the linkages at the trans and the throttle. The shifter was still inoperable. I pulled the shifter and disconnected the cables and the shifter operated smooth as silk. Thank Buddah as the cost of a new shifter is about $ 300. It turns out the stuck cable was the shifter, I couldn't get it to budge.

I'm putting in new cables next weekend.

Anybody have any advice on andjusting them after I have them installed?

I just matched up the length of the old against the new. Worked perfectly the first time.

Works so smooth now, I have a little bit of throttle creep. Tends to slowly go back towards idle. Before, I could have towed my dingy tied to the throttle lever and never have it move.

While you're at it have you considered adding a manual "fuel shut-off" cable to those boats with the red push stop button at the helm? On my Yanmar 3JH3E, I normally shut the engine off at the helm with the stop button, however I've had the solenoid switch in the engine compartment fail on occasion. That requires opening the engine compartment and pulling the fuel shut off manually. If there was an engine fire, this option wouldn't be available. So I'm thinking of adding a short cable connected to the fuel shut off arm for redundacy and safety. Anybody done this?

I have a 3jh2e also. The factory installed a cable and pull knob in the companionway, it is connected to the throttle body and shuts off the fuel. I don't have a solenoid button at the helm. I never heard of such a thing. Sounds problematic. Manual fuel shutoff is best.

Steve: It was an easy, (but time consuming), job. The best pricing I found for the cables were at Outboard Motor Shop in Oakland. 18' for the shifter and 19' for the throttle cost about $ 100.

Update: Works great now!

I put the new cables in. There is really no adjustment for the throttle. The shifter has some room for adjustment. The shifting is easy and smooth, however, it doesn't really index into neutral easily, you have to search for it. I think I'll adjust down the shifter so it is a bit shorter travel, that may help.

Mike,

Standard on newer and larger boats.
