I have an Edson steering pedestal on my Hunter 28. The throttle has become very difficult to move. Any thoughts on how to loosen it up. Thanks.

Sticky Throttle

Hi Lewis, I was experiencing the same sticky throttle on my Hunter 335 - 18hp Yahmar. I went thru the trouble of disconnecting the throttle cable at the Edson Pedestal and at the Engine and discovered that the throttle lever on the engine was the culprit. There had been a small water leak from a hose clamp that wasn't tight and seawater dripped down and around the throttle lever on the engine and corroded. With a couple of shots of WD-40 and a pair of vice grips to work the lever back and forth, it finally freed up and now everything is back to normal. Good luck, Cap'n Brent S/V Elena Lua 1991 Hunter 335

Sticky throttle

My throttle is fine, but the shifter was stuck solid. I could force the local controler, which I did. I added drops of lube down the cable and it freed up a bit, but it's still harder then it should be.

3 things to check

I replaced both control cables last fall on my 81' H30. The 3 things to check are the levers at each end, the cable itself, and the cable brake. I would first trace the throttle cable and see if there is a throttle brake on it. Remove the throttle brake and see if the problem goes away. If it does, then reinstall it and adjust the tension so the throttle moves easily but dosen't vibrate back to idle. If the brake isnt the problem, then disconnect the throttle cable at each end, and see if the engine lever, or pedistal lever is the problem. If they both move freely, then that only leaves the cable. Check that with the cable brake removed, and see if it moves freely (it should). If the cable is stiff, then it will need to be replaced. I got all the parts I needed from Edson directly. Hope this helps.
