Sticking Throttle

Hi, has anyone had a problem with the throttle sticking on their Hunter? I have a H310 & recently my throttle has been sticking with revs up around 1500 RPM. It feels a bit stiff and I can push it back to an idle at the engine. I have pulled out the throttle control at the pedestal and tried to lubricate the cable, but this doesn't seem to make any difference & I can't easily tell what is going wrong by looking at the throttle control mechanism.

Does anyone have any idea about what this problem would be?

Thanks
Keith

If you removed the center cable entirely and lubricated it and it still sticks, either a cable holder has loosened or it's time to replace it.

Thanks Don. I didn't actually remove the centre cable, does it remove entirely from the outer sheath? I actually just tried to spray some lubricant down from the top of the cable at the pedestal and up from the bottom at the motor. Is it common for these cables to become a bit sticky, or is it more likely that it is something else in the mechanism?

As Don has suggested, pull the centre wire cable completely and grease from one end to the other. The centre cable is attached to the throttle lever of the engine (which is really a GOVERNOR control) simply by a set screw and usually with a 90 degree bend in the end of the wire.

Just to be sure, while the wire cable is disconnected, check the operation of the throttle/governor control to ensure it moves freely.

Good advice. Regardless of what mechanism you have on your boat, the Edson website has very good maintenance information. www.edsonmarine.com

Morse Teleflex I think makes most of the cables, check there, too.

Thanks guys, much appreciated. I will pull the cable out and grease it.

By the way, is the 90 degree bend in the cable on the engine side or the control side? I assume that I will need to leave the bend in the cable and pull out from the end with the bend on it.

Hi Don & guys, do you know how to identify what cable to replace it with (if it needs replacing). I had a look at the Teleflex (now Seastar) website & it is as clear as mud

It's the length that is the most important thing to know. I have never had to replace one, so perhpas others can chime in.

Make sure you don't remove the inner cable completely if you try to lube it. Reinserting it can be tricky at best. Unfortunately, it's rather difficult to know when you are almost at the end.

If you would rather simply replace it, take the old cable to one of the chandler ies in Sydney and they can easily determine the exact length replacement. If you are lucky, they will be able to read the designation mark to cross-reference a replacement.
