I fabbed up a pair of mast gates as described someplace using hardware store door threshold strips and fitted them to the mast. The problem surfaced that the thickness of the aluminum is significantly less than that of the mast track edges causing the sail slugs to bind going up or down when they transitioned between the two. I tried gluding on some thin HDPE plastic strips to the gates to even out the thickness, but no good. Does anybody have any other ideas? Do the stainless steel gates eliminate this problem?

Where to get metal

If you're looking for metal pieces to build/replace pieces for your mast you can get what you need at Online Metals (link below) and they'll pre cut to size (but not for free). Try to think up a good big order or you may find that you're paying more for shipping than for the metal.

One answer

One answer is to buy a set of mast gates from Joe Martinek. Joe's email address is: JoeMartinek@StarBand.net He charged me $30 for a nice set of stainless gates. I am not sure if the price is current.
