Hi, Unfortunately Steve, some of us do live in the cold. Since I've been sailing bigger boats (Legend 37) for the last 10 years, the winters do get longer and colder as I wait for spring. I live in MA/RI and sail on Narragansett Bay. The variety of sailing in New England is phenominal (sp?)because of the different location to get to. I often think of sailing year round, but there's something about the change of season that's nice. We do have variety - sailing in summer, winterizing the boat in fall, skiing in winter, commissioning the boat in spring. And the cycle continues. I know you have it all year round, but there's no place like NE all year, also. Any thoughts from anyone else? Happy Holidays, Paul.

Snow's Falling....

Did someone mention "cold"??? Here in Park City, UT everyone is all a'smiles with this big snow storm - we're a ski resort. But the older I get, the more I would rather be sailing and golfing than skiing. I love the seasons - we get three - four if you count the "mud-season" - but I do wish that the sailing season lasted a lot longer than 5 months! About once a month I go visit the "Narrow Escape" to see how she's weathering..... Spring (mud-season) is only four months away! Happy Holidays to all! Michael O'Hara

Michael O: That is exactly what I am talking about. Not to make you jealous (and I know you are) but we had our old Hunter 25' in Lake Tahoe. Same problem. Start doing the cold sailing stuff In May, warmer sailing in June. Ahhhh the 4th of July finally get to take the shirt off (oh shit I got a sun burn) put the shirt back on. I forgot that we are at 6200 feet and the sun is VERY intense up here. Well August and the first week of September is nice. Mid Sept. the weather is cooling off again thats cool sailing again. Pull the boat by the end of Oct. and on the hard again. Now Lake Tahoe is only 30 min. from the house. But if I drive another two hours I can leave the boat in the water all year round. Have a delema. All year round or 5 mos. Lake Tahoe (VERY BEAUTIFUL) is only 26 miles long and 13 miles wide and about 1300 ft deep or sail in the delta and out to S.F. bay and out through the Golden Gate. OKAY, I moved the boat 16 years ago and have never looked back. When I need a Lake Tahoe fix I just beg a ride with some friends. Now we just need to get through the winter and sailing season starts in Feb/March depending on the Fog. If you ever need a place to go on vacation try towing that Hunter to Ca. for a couple of weeks. It is really a great place 1000 miles of water not counting the Bay.

New England Sailing

Hi Steve: Like you, I will be sailing my boat in Narragansett Bay. I was out to my Catalina 25 today and the winds in East Greenwich let me know it was winter. When you live in our area of the country, you must make an effort to get your sailing in when you can. A brief aside, I lived in Vermont and owned horses. During the winter we didn't ride because of the danger of not knowing what was, or was not under the snow. I like sailing better, one of the main reasons is that you don't have to feed a sailboat when your not using it.

Winter in SF Bay?

Steve - Is it ever NOT winter in SF Bay? I visit there about 2-4 times each year, and it feels colder than the Wasatch Mts! Interesting that you had a H25 in Tahoe - the Narrow Escape is a H25 also, and every year I threaten to haul her out of the mountains to San Diego so I can extend the sailing season. With flights being about $100 RT, I could make quite a few trips! Your H31 would definitely be fun on the Bay - I've been sailing my brother's 1983 H31 since it was new. Handles great! (And good PHRF numbers, too!) Have a GRAND holiday! Michael O'Hara

winter?

went sailing last saturday on a buddy's 380 on South San Francisco Bay. Got laughed at when I showed up with my foul weather gear. Light winds, flat seas, but I'm superstitious enough to think that it would have snowed had I left the foulies at home. T-Shirt sailing all the way up to the point when the tide shifted and the entire fleet abandoned the race rather than getting swept under the bridge. Forgot to put on the sunblock, and got my lips sunburnt again. Ah, December! Didn't have to put on a windbreaker until after that second beer back at the yacht club. No wind again on Sunday, so we left the 410 at the dock and took out the rowboat instead. Walked into the club with sweat pouring off my forehead. Yes, this is the way to do winter.
