Yamaha 26 sailboat Yamaha 26 Gibsons BC
Hi there,

My Yamaha 26 ft. sailboat , 1982, has a lot of fibration coming from the propeller driveshaft.
If I pull the shaft sideways, inside the boat, I feel about 1/8 th of an inch of play .
The boat is equipped with a rotary seal , not a stuffing box.
The strut at the propeller end has a cutlass bearing , which is still good.

My questions are:
1. Is there a bearing in the sterntube?

2. The propeller shaft is a 7/8th shaft , with a folding prop.
I like to replace the folding prop with a fixed bladed one .
Do most shafts have a standart taper that will fit most props?

Thanks for any info you may sent me,

If you have a rotary seal and it has a rubber bellows on it, be advised that when the seal breaks, your boat sinks. I think these rotary seals are living proof of the old axiom: "Not all changes are improvements".

Replacing the wax-impregnated packing to the old stuffing box with teflon packing accomplishes the same thing for a fraction of the cost.

Can't speak for the 26, but my 30 had a 7/8" shaft, and no bearing in the shaft log. Nothing in there to support a shaft, and you wouldn't want to flex it anyway.

I removed the folding prop from my 37 and put a fixed blade on. The taper was standard, but they had sawed the end off the shaft to accommodate the folding prop, so I had to put in a cotter pin and castle nut to hold the prop on. Cobalt drills work pretty well for putting holes in stainless.

If you need a manual, contact me at info@yamahasailboats.org, and I'll send you one.
