I think it's time I bite the bullet and get a stern rail. I don't like how my outboard obscures my stern light in the up position so that it's not visible for it's full 135 degrees.

Since I don;t have one (and the fabricator wants measurements), I am really unsure how far forward it should go. I guess that it should go as far forward as possible leaving, say 3 feet between the cabin top and end of the rail for entry and egress. Does that sound about right?

What I would do is check some marinas and look for an O'Day 23 with a stern rail. Bring your camera and take a few pics. You may be able to get a few measurements and write them down. If I knew of someone up here who has an O'Day 23, I'd get it for you. Perhaps my friend Tony in Ct will chime in. He has an O'Day 23 with a stern rail.

I finally got some suggested measurements out of the fabricator to plot on my boat. It seems like a fairly insubstancial thing the want to sell -- it seems to barely come up the sides. But perhaps that's necessary because of how the main sheet is attached.

As long as it look right in relation to the height of your bow pulpit. Stern rails are great. I love mine. Lifelines and stanchions are next. Give that bullet a good bite. :D

Oh, I have lifelines and stanchions. I even replaced them recently.

You're all set then. I don't know if Rudy has a stern pulpet for an O'Day 23. One of my friends was able to buy one off him for his 75 O'Day 25 years ago. It may be worth your while to find out if you can get one already made for cheaper money.

I have a stern rail I took off my 22, it interfered with the main sheet. It's in decent shape, no real rust spots but you can tell its used, would probably polish up nicely. I hate to just dump it so it's sitting in my driveway. I would give it away to anyone that wants it, the problem is finding someone that needs it and has a boat that matches its dimensions. Like I said, it's not a good fit for a 22 IMO, looked great but came just too far forward, it has the rail extended forward with eyelets to attach life lines and these caught on the main sheet, very annoying. If I actually had life lines it would prbably be ok, but even when I add them they will stop a the front of the cockpit.

anyway, i digress...

It stands 2' high, back legs are 4' apart, front are 6' apart, total front to back depth is 30", front to back laegs are abot 24".

Yours (or anyone else) is you want it. No idea how to ship such a thing, wrap it in paper and put a tag on it, I guess.

A good marine metal fabricator/welder could make the bends and necessary changes to that stern rail that would make it more user friendly. The front of the rail could be rounded off and stainless steel bales could be welded to it for the lifeline attachments.

I measured my stern today and their suggested measurements will not work at all. The back of my O23 has a cut out for an outboard. I need something more like the photo of the O22 sternrail above with about 4' between the rear rails.

Here I sit after retrofitting a stern rail earlier today for my 22... Damn, and I've got a nephew in Shreveport, LA... A little late checking the replies...

For closure sake, the stern rail is gone - on it's way to bear62041, may it serve you well. I wrapped it in bubble warp, then wrapped that in cardboard I had cut into strips from a large box, all held together with plenty of tape - you should have seen the look the UPS lady gave me when I walked into the store carrying that thing - I almost knocked all their doo-dads off the counter trying to swing it around to get in the door. She had a heck of a time trying to figure out how to weight it, and then how to measure it. But they shipped it for a very reasonable amount with no problems.

And.....................it arrived in great shape, and will fit my Oday 222 perfectly as soon as I remove the original small side rails, fill their holes, grind the 2 aft round bases on the "new" stern rail to a rectangular shape so they will fit the narrow "deck" across the stern. My life lines are too long, but are shot, so I found a pair of almost new ones for sale on the forum. Now to find the time, and decent weather in the midwest to get everything installed. I'll submit pics when it is done. I thank you so much Ken !!!!

Is it cut out like this 240? If so maybe this picture will help. It may not. I can't see the pic very well while attaching it to this post. So please forgive if it does not show the stern rail very well.

It's on the port side rather than the starboard, but it's the same cutout.

I see you have two pieces at the corner and a lifeline strung between them. That's not really what I want. My whole motivation here is to get a nav light in the rear high enough that the outboard won't obscure it when raised on its bracket.
