After the second time of my portable fish finder transducer being cut and another $75, my patience is gone. Both times it got caught in the rudder hinge and it cut it like a knife. My plan of attack is to drill a hole through the stern fairly high so I can run both my gas line for the motor and the transducer at the same time through the same hole. I do not want this permanent if possible. Any idea of how I can seal off the hole once I drill it so it will not rot. Is it possible drill the hole tape it with like duct tape on one side put the tape on the other side with a little hole at the top then fill it full of epoxy and let it dry. Also should I make the hole bigger then redrill it so the epoxy on the sides stays intact.

Install an appropriate thru-hull fitting for what you want to do. You can find lots of possibilities to look at in the various online catalogs.

A lot of guys have installed their 'ducers inside the hull. Mine is centerline and as far foreward as possible, stuck in a wad of toilet ring wax. It works fine there. No cut wire, no barnacles and fewer holes in the hull.
To test for a good spot, place the ducer in a large baggie with water, place it on a wet spot on the inside of the hull , not the liner, and turn on the machine. Testing is agood idea to avoid air bubbles in the layup, etc, etc.

Mount the depth sounder transducer inside

I'm with melinuxo ... why not mount the depth transducer inside he hull? Toilet bowl wax works fine. To make the installation a bit cleaner I built a small, bottomless box out of thin plywood. I then mounted it to the inside of the hull with RTV and filled it with toilet bowl wax. Works great!

I have an transducer that I'm going to mount inside as you did. My question is will splicing in an extension for the transmitting cable effect performance. I want to mount the transducer forward of the keel but I don't believe there is enough cable to reach the instrument that is mounted on my pedestal in the cockpit. I haven't actually measured...but just in case.

Also - I have an Edson pedestal...how do you remove the top so I can feed the cable?

Anytime you have to add wire, I would soder it one at a time and then apply liquid electrical but avoid that if you can and put down the money to get the correct length of cable. Regarding the Edson wheel steering, I am not sure what you have or the age of boat but if it is an issue just running the cable down pedestal and thru a bottom hole can be difficult but there is a trick. If you get a long small tube or pipe and run the cable thru that to the bottom hole of the pedestal, it makes installation easier.

As for the transcucer when installing inside the hull whatever method you use, you are risking the fact there are no air bubbles in the glass which if there are can really screw up the readings. That transducer for depth only I always suggested thru hull and sealed with 5200 for a permanent installation.
