Well my class just made ... I'm an adjunct faculty member at a local junior college ... this means I will have a little $$$ to spend this season on our Hunter 26. I'm looking at Hunter Stern Rail Seats. We have a 1994 Hunter 26 (#174) - I'm not sure if backing plates are molded into the fiberglass or not. My question - in the opinion of the forum - should I attempt to install the new SRS myself or let my local dealer do it (for about 7 boat units)? Tom Grass Grasshopper II H-26 #174

Rail Seats

We recently installed Stern Rail seats this past summer on our 1994 Hunter 23.5 and enjoy them immensely. It took my teenage son and me approximately 6 hours to install, it is necessary to have help because you need someone to turn the wrench while someone nimble goes inside to hold the bolt nuts. Good Luck and enjoy When you get the stern rail seats there will be a serial number sequence on the instructions that will indicate what models of Hunters have the built in backing plates. Also inside take of the divider between the stern berth and the very back of the stern to give you easy access for reaching the inside of the backing plates. The backing plates come in square aluminum plates that you will have to cut to a template fitting the inside of the tapered stern transoms and rail seat flange holes, its very easy just take your time and be precise with marking the holes to drill in the back up plate and the boat.

can you say "screwdriver"?

Mot clear if you are talking about the stern rail mounted seats or something mounted directly to the transon. Regardless, it's a relatively simple task to mount the seats. Both screw, or preferably bolt, onto the rail or transom. If it's the transom to which you refer when you mention backing plates, as long as you can get access to the underside of the mounting area, why pay someone else $700 to crawl in there to do something you can do? The rail mounted type seats simply screw or bolt onto the rail which obviously requires holes drilled in the rail - another task arguably not worth $700...

Not a Tough Job

The backing plates did not start untill half way through 95 if I remember right. There are a couple of posts in the archive on doing this. Use lot's of clamps and do not tighten all the screws before you have them all tightened. Have fun.
