My H33 2006 has stern rail seats (like many newer Hunters) consisting of teak slats fastened onto a plastic (Starboard?) base. Several years ago the varnish on the teak started to look bad, and I just took off the seats to refinish.
I was surprised to find that the teak slats are screwed onto the plastic - I had assumed they were glued in a waterproof manner. The underside of the slats are not varnished, so it's clear to me that no matter what finish I put on the top of the (rather thin) slats, water will soak up from underneath and ruin the finish on the top surface.
Do you think it will help if I varnish the lower side of the slats as well as the top?
And is varnish the right product to use? I'm wondering about urethene (Varethene) instead.
Any comments and/or prior experience would be gratefully received.
