My H33 2006 has stern rail seats (like many newer Hunters) consisting of teak slats fastened onto a plastic (Starboard?) base. Several years ago the varnish on the teak started to look bad, and I just took off the seats to refinish.

I was surprised to find that the teak slats are screwed onto the plastic - I had assumed they were glued in a waterproof manner. The underside of the slats are not varnished, so it's clear to me that no matter what finish I put on the top of the (rather thin) slats, water will soak up from underneath and ruin the finish on the top surface.

Do you think it will help if I varnish the lower side of the slats as well as the top?

And is varnish the right product to use? I'm wondering about urethene (Varethene) instead.

Any comments and/or prior experience would be gratefully received.

Just scrub it with teak cleaners and recoat with teak oil like International Paint Premium Teak Oil.

Yes, coat the underneath of the slats as water will seep up and that is one primary culprit for causing a finish to peel off.
