Stern rail seats- moving back stays

I recently purchased stern rail seats for my 1980-33. The back stays have to be moved from the last toe rail opening to the third opening forward to accomodate the seats. Has anyone had a similar problem? Should I just move the stays myself or call in a rigger. The move is about 10in. Also, in moving the stays does that cut off the room to move around the helm? Any suggestions out there.

Toe rail????

Ed you may want to double check that very closely. The backstay attachment points for the split back stay on my 1983 33 are stainless "U" bolts going through the toe rail and deck. None of thed 33's I've looked at had the backstay attached directly to the toe rail. There seems to be a difference in this area between our boats. I got tired of smacking my head and shoulder on the stay so when I replaced the standing rigging last winter I went to "TWIN" back stays. They are well out of the way and provide a measure of security. If our attachment points are different it would explain why it was in my way and you don't have that problem. If you move the attachment point too far forward you might end up with problems from the mainsail's roach rubbing on the stay. Measure more carefuly than Hunter did. When I did my twin back stays I found (after I finished the final tightening on the Sta-Locks, that Hunter had varied the attachment point locations by about one and a half inches. On the split it didn"t matter, but on the twins it made one long and the other short. I'm sending a scanned picture of this area with the orriginal split stay to your e-mail address. The picture should tell all.
