My swim ladder is stern mounted (port side) adjacent to the transom mounted outboard motor. I have crew who has leg weakness and finds it very difficult to climb over the single stern rail (to which the lifelines attach) There is a split backstay. I am looking for advise on modifications to permit easy access to the cockpit. My thought is to cut the rail, put in tubing ends with eyes. I see these in West marine catalogue. A section of line with clips would replace the removed rail section when the ladder is not in use. I have seen these arangements with doulble rail systems and they are built for the purpose. My concern is that it will weaken the whole stern rail system. Perhaps someone has added diagonal rails or vertical stanchions to reinforce. Any experience or suggestions would be appreciated.
