Stern light on Hunter 23

I am trying to replace my stern light. When I took the old light off, the old wiring from the old light was still hooked up. When I saw this I decided to use this wiring. When I was working to hook up the new light, one wire broke loose from the splicing which is inside the boat. Hunter marine didn't give me any wire to pull out of the hole for the wiring of the new light either. I tried to find a easy way to get to the inside wiring on the starboard aft side of my boat. The only way that I can see to get to the wiring is to slide under the cockpit of the boat from inside(or underneath). I have one big problem. I am to big to slide under the cockpit. Does anyone on this forum have experience with a Hunter 23 1978 model? I am up to any suggestions on solving my problem.

I would

attach a new set of wires to the old, then GENTLY pull the old wire thru the boat, until you retrieve the new, then finish the job.

Access plate

I might not be as pretty but you could cut a hole right behind the light and install a water tight access cover that screws in. They are large enough to fit your entire hand inside. Either that or find a small person to climb in and feed the wie back out for you. Good Luck.

Or Forget About the Old Wire

Snake some new wire through there. Just remember to cut the old wire off at the switch.

86 h23 might have more room or...

...you're bigger than me. at 6', 200# i can pretty easily squirm on my back under the cockpit floor to reach the starbord side and/or the wires. however, if i couldn't, i'd get my "grabbing tool" for lack of knowing what it is called. (mechanical fingers maybe?) its one of those 2' long cable thingys with the fingers at the one end and the thumb actuated plunger at the other that i use to retrive screws from totally inaccessable places that i manage to drop them. (hope you've seen one of these so you know what i'm talking about). with this i bet i could grab near the end of the wire and after a few stabs get the end out the hole to someone that was waiting to grab it. from there do what jkksail said and attach some new wires to the old and pull them through from back at the end of the coffen berth. (i think thats where they come from). good luck.....

Fixed problem

Thank you everyone for the help. I bought all the wiring to re-wire. I sweet talked my wife into sliding under the cockpit. She said the wiring looked fine. She spliced wire to the original wire and the light is working great. I think I found out my wife is a true "First Mate". I e-mailed Hunter marine and asked them also about my problem. They didn't have any easier way to replace the wiring than you all. Again, Thanks alot for all the suggestions.
