Help.......I need advice on my stern gland. Lambi is an American Hunter 355. When I stripped the stern gland there was only one piece of packing!!? When I tried to repack it only 1 piece would go back, if I placed 2 pieces in the gland nut would not screw up regardless of the massive effort. I tried 8mm and 6mm packing but to no avail.. Help.... The Gland is a plastic version that is jubilee clipped in side a rubber boot. Any help or photo's would be good..

Go Dripless

Do yourself a favor and get rid of the packing gland. Install a PSS Dripless shaft seal. Look up PYI Inc., they are worth money and time to install. I installed one on my 1978 HC 33 myself, and I have had absolutely no trouble with it. The guys at PYI are great and will work with you on getting the right size for your prop shaft. Good luck!

my approach

I have an (American built) Hunter 35 with a plastic packing gland fitting. I just repacked it whilst the boat was on the hard. To do so I loosened all hose clamps around the rubber "hose" then eased the plastic gland towards the engine along the shaft, completely out of the hose. Next I used a fine, thin, stiff rod. Inserting this from the aft end of the gland, I pushed the old packing out. There were three rings in there in addition to three "hard" rings, one metal and two plastic. By the way, some shops sell a tool that will act as a pick for flax removal. These have some sort of hook or fine-threaded screw on their tips. Following removal of the old wax rings, it is laborious to get new rings in. I first reinserted the gland in the hose and tightened the clamps. The new rings first need to be cut properly, then individually fit in. I found it was easiest to insert and pack each ring separately. The hard rings which remained on the shaft were kept at the forward end of the gland and a new ring inserted aft of the hard rings. Then tighten the packing nut into the fitting, compressing the wax ring. If these instructions are not understandable, you can contact me via email via this web site's mechanism under a boat owner's link.

I think you shout be using three wraps of 3/16

teflon packing. The 8mm is way too thick. Are their other wraps still inside the cap?

Are we talking the rudder shaft gland??

If so then there should only be one packing as the rudder doesn't do much 360ing and the gland is usually right at the water line so there is not much pressure on it.

Second the motion for PSS

I also installed a PSS Shaft Seal a few years ago. It's great. Worth the money and effort.
