stern depth a problem?

1976 Oday 25, when actually under sail with gear and three people, no extra gear and two people or whatever - my rudder is submerged well above the forward curve shape. I am talking about where it gets narrow to come up the stern. So deep the water line is about halfway up the asthetic paint stripe, maybe eight inches above the empty water line, and four inches above the weighted but not under way water line.This is of concern especially while motoring, as it is even more pronounced. I have added a wedge between the motor mount and stern to get the angle better (flatter) but it still burrows in, the faster the deeper.Thoughts on causes and solutions will be greatly appreciated.Weight distribution helps, but this seems to be more than that (and my crew would mutiny if they had to ride the bow in a storm while we motored!)

Your squating O'day

TT,Every boat I have seen in this class (Oday 23, 25, Catalina 22, 25 etc) squats underway. This was once explained to me as the function of our relatively low hullspeeds being easily approached with the bow attempting to climb onto a plane. I don't know if its true, but it makes sense to me. My solution in my C25 is to trim the boat by stowing gear forward so that the hull is balanced at 5 - 7 knots. It works sailingwise, but it does mean that the boat sits bow down on her mooring. Guess you can't have it both ways.Justin - O'day Owners' Web

TTIf the major concern is the stern borrowing in when the power is on , don't pitch it out more, Pin the motor in so that it puts pressure on the bow.This will raise the stern somewhat but I think if you play with it a little you will find the best engine angle setting for the boat.I am assuming the the wedge you put in angles the propeller further from the boat. Swing it closer will flatten the boat.Remember that it is a displacement hull and that it will not motor more than hull speed and once you have achieved hull speed the extra power will drive the stern under as it tries to become a planing hull which it won't do.Hope it helps,r.w.landau
