Stern bearing too much play

Hi

I have a Hunter 36 2006 . The shaft is too loose in the stern bearing any one can help to tell me if it is easy to replace and while a do the stern bearing should I change the strut bearing and repack the stuffing box. What could couse the bearing wear.

The reason for being loose is due to a very slight misalignment of the shaft caused by catching a rope in the propeller. The shaft must be removed and checked for misalignment. The stern bearing must replaced and the stuffing box rechecked

Shaft alignment is the most common reason for strut bearing wear. Shaft alignment can only be done in the water and only after the boat has been afloat for at least a week. Strut bearing can be replaced without removing the shaft and/or strut but you need to use a bearing replacement tool for this job. It takes about 1/2 hour and you will have to remove the prop only. In many boats removing the shaft requires removing the rudder too, a major undertaking and a real PITA. Borrow or rent the tool or make one for yourself and do it the easy way.

That is some tool but i have seen less involved tool used for this job and so check here on this forum for more tools for this repair and do believe that there is room to change bearing with out removing the rudder,let me know my 2007 is out of the water and can send photo or measurement.
I did check mine and is very good no play at all.
The only reason that I say look for more tools here on this forum is that tool must $$$$$ and might as well let yard do the repair.
