Stern bearing, Cutlass bearing question

Hi, With a new stern bearing ordered from Vega Marin I showed up to the boat today with the proper allen wrenches to take off my stern bearing cover piece to see what I am up against. Several years ago a yard did an "adjustment" on the stern bearing which at the time took away the little bit of play the shaft had and I was told I didn't need a cutlass bearing (my fear at the time). I have developed the play again and now I am addressing it. When I took the gasket out of position and slid everything back on the shaft (prop not pulled yet) I was shocked to find massive play in all directions (1/8" or more). I realize the bronze piece fits into the fixed bronze piece and the gasket snugs it all but as I look to the back of the bearing I would expect to see something that resembled a cutlass bearing but I don't, just the back of the stern bearing receptacle and the 1/8"gap around the shaft. So my question is do Vega's have a cutlass bearing and mine is toast or has my boat been run for years without a Cutlass bearing and never knew it? I will try to get pics of my find. I fear I will be putting the yard owners kids through college on this. Any thoughts?BradV2548

Mine has a cutlass bearing. I don't see why yours should not also. 1/8" gap is about right for a cutlass bearing tolerance. Looks like the yard forgot to reinstall yours. From: "brad_45@...
