My son gave me WM gift card for Christmas, so I went out and bought a new stereo for the boat. Before getting into installing it on the boat, I wanted to hook it up and see what it souded like.
So I took the as yet unwired DC panel out of the boat and brought it and battery in to the house to hook up the new toy on my dining room table. The power wiring instructions were a little confusing, as the yellow wire goes basically straight to the POS of the battery, and the red wire goes to the accesory side of a switch. The black wire goes to chassis ground.
There is nothing about any wire going to the negative bus. I thought every circuit had to have a return to the negative bus to work. The light fixture I hooked up to test the panel did, as did the label backlights and the breaker on/off leds. I checked the voltage where the yellow and red wires connected to my breaker panel, and there is 0v. I then checked for voltage across the DC positive bus, and the DC negative bus, and there's my 12v. But connecting either of the leads from the stereo to the neg bus doesn't help.
At this point, I'm not sure whether the wiring is not right, or the unit just doesn't work at all. Btw, I did pull the blade fuse and put an ohmeter across it to check for continuity.
What don't I understand? Can someone please simplify for me how to wire up a 12v stereo?
Thanks,
Bill
