I currently have a set of speakers down below port and starboard. I am looking to install 2-6.5" round flush mounted CLARION speakers in the cockpit. I was thinking of mounting them to the right and left of where I sit behind wheel in the rear lazarette. I have a 1986 31' with the typical T-cockpit arrangement. Any other suggestions for placement? I'd like to leave the bulkhead by hatchway clear to lean against.

Consider the use...

If you only want to listen while sailing or while in the cockpit then that setup is fine (mine are that way). If you want to listen while on any other part of the topsides or while swimming (?) then I'd recommend a higher placement to prevent the shielding from the cockpit and coping.

for what it is worth

what i did on my H31

I mounted 2 way, 6" marine box speakers on the rear combing to the right and left of swim ladder. No big holes, and it gets the tweeters up higher so the sound is closer to ear level while I am stting at the wheel. They can also be angled up and down and are removable when the boat is hauled for the winter. The downside is, they are blocked when there are crew sitting to either side of the wheel, but I imagine flush mounts would be too. The sound is fairly decent. In the cabin itself I have NHT super zero Xu's and a Polk dual coil 8" sub.

Tom,

just so you don't think you're a minority of one, I agree with you!!!

Any chance you can do something about the "music" coming out of some of the cars these days?

speaker placement

Have you looked at stantion mount speakers by Boss (not Bose)- they are designed with integrated clamp be mounted on stantion or aft cage rails. about $75-119 each

This will not require you cutting/drilling into the cockpit walls-

I had a '88 H28.5, very similar to yours. When I bought it the previous owner had placed 2 6" Clarion speakers in the cockpit. 1 was on the port side, aft end, junder the spot where someone would sit when leaning against the stern rail. The other was on the Stbd side, aft end, under the shore power connector. Wiring was easy and hidden and, being flush mounted, didn't get in the way.

Hope this helps!
