We've just installed a stereo system on our Catalina 320. When we're on shore power with the battery chgarger on we get a lot of static on the radio. any suggestions?
If you go to Radio Shack and purchase a noise eliminater (part #270-030, $4) or a 10A noise filter (#270-051, $15), either of these is likely to solve your problem. Noise on the DC bus is pretty common due to the high-frequency power switching in chargers and fluorescent lights. An alternate location for the filter is at the source (charger) instead of at the stereo. That way the entire system will be noise-free Rich
I had the same problem. It's noise from the battery charger. Flip the swith off on the charger and you will see the difference. I decided to dispense with battery charging when listening "in port". I guess afilter would work but have not tried one - or even looked.
Doreen; Where did you hook up power for your stereo? You shouldn't have any noise, even with the charger running. Make sure your power takeoff point is truly DC, with no connection to the AC. Your DC panel should already be noise free, if not, have it checked out. Filters only cover up the problem. Larry W.
